September 5 - Wild Clay Workshop

E. Saffronia Downing will give an artist talk describing her use of foraged materials in her ceramics practice. Saffronia will describe how to forage and process wild clay from local deposits. This lecture will be followed by a Wild Clay Workshop, in which Saffronia will teach others how to process foraged clay.

Downing is a Chicago-based artist working in clay to map material residue across landscapes of time and place. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BA in Studio Art from Hampshire College. Downing is known to use foraged local material to create site-specific installations and sculptures. Her work was recently featured in the Fall 2019 Setouchi Triennial in Japan. She has also exhibited nationally at numerous Chicago and Baltimore galleries.

Wild Clay Workshop

In this workshop on September 5th, participants will learn how to process wild clay. A range of foraged clays will be provided at GnarWare for hands-on exploration. Participants will make a small hand-built piece using wild clay which they can take home at the end of the session. In this workshop, Saffronia will describe how she uses wild clay in her own practice, and teach participants how to explore clay in their local landscape. Participants are encouraged to bring a few samples of organic material, glass, soil, or clay from their backyard or park to test in the kiln.
